Why Are Hard Rock Bands Considered Metal?

Bands like Van Halen, Journey, and Bon Jovi are considered "Heavy Metal." Even Deep Purple. Its ridiculous. Metal has extended guitar solos and intros, the following bands don't. I'm tired of hearing my friends praise Metallica and I say, I don't like metal. I like Rock. Then they say the music I like (Journey, Van Halen, Bon Jovi) is heavy metal. Metal is a form of rock, rock isn't a form of metal people. Elvis isn't heavy metal. Just because the music started in the 80's, which is where metal started to become popular, everyone considers it metal. I'm tired of rock bands being called heavy metal.
