Why is the Government involving itself...?

in the News of the World phone hacking scandal, when 1,400 workers are to be made redundant at a Derby train factory? Surely this just smacks of the government interfering in what could become criminal proceedings, whilst ignoring the fact that they are failing miserably in protecting our own workers.
